Attitude is everything! You here this a lot but what impact does attitude have on day to day life? Let me show you what impact it had on an event in my life then I will share with you 6 tips on how you can change a negative attitude to give you a more positive outcome.
I am a very physical person and very disciplined when it comes to exercise in fact I have trouble sitting still for any length of time.
However, recently I was diagnosed with an auto-immune condition affecting my motor skills and strength. I found it difficult to walk and my ability to grip or lift anything was greatly impaired! I also lost feeling in my hands, feet and legs. I suffered from extreme fatigue so had to limit my activity to small bursts.
I could no longer do my job so had to resign and the day to day activities became more and more difficult.
During this time I kept going to the gym every second day doing a cycling class and weights as I could manage. After seeking medical help I was started on treatment and am now almost back to normal function.
I could have used this situation as an excuse to do nothing but I chose to take full responsibility for my life. The result was I could remain positive despite the circumstances which gave me the strength and confidence to keep going and making the most of the situation.
Keeping a positive attitude made all the difference in how I dealt with what was happening to me. I chose to focus on what I could do, not what I couldn’t. I saw opportunities to improve my quality of life despite my circumstances.
There were 6 things I did that allowed me to adjust to my circumstances and it all came back to my attitude to change.

What is attitude?
“In psychology, an attitude refers to a set of emotions, beliefs, and behaviours toward a particular object, person, thing, or event.
Attitudes are often the result of experience or upbringing.
They can have a powerful influence over behaviour.
While attitudes are enduring, they can also change.”
There are 3 components to Attitude which are known as the ABCs
Affective-Feelings and emotions about the attitude object e.g. I am afraid of flying.
Behavioural– How the attitude will influence the way you act or behave e.g. I will avoid going anywhere if I am required to fly.
Cognitive– What is your belief about the attitude object e.g. I believe flying is dangerous.
Here are 6 Tips on changing a negative attitude when you can’t change the situation.
To become aware that you can’t change the situation or event is important because what you aren’t aware of you can’t change.
You need to accept you are unable to change what is happening. It is like aging we can’t stop growing older but we can accept that it is going to happen.
Examine your beliefs around the situation. Where did they come from, what evidence do I have to back up this belief, what evidence is there that can give me a different perspective on this belief, What can I do to change this belief so it looks different and therefore the expected outcome changes
Re-frame or re-adjust how you interpret the situation to a more positive view. This requires going out and looking for information, people, situations, that support a different and more positive belief to your circumstance, then adopting the new belief as your own. This takes work and time but if you can see the benefit to you, it will make it easier.
Hang around with people that are positive role models. Read inspiring stories and watch inspiring videos of others that have faced what you are facing and copy what they are doing. Look for the positive components in what is happening to you and what you can do.
Finally an attitude of gratitude. Journal something you are grateful for each day can change your focus from the negative attitude to a more positive one.
. In my situation I had to become aware that I had an auto-immune condition that I could do nothing about and accept what was happening. Then examine my beliefs around what was happening to me. Along with medical treatment I looked after my health, taking supplements to support my nervous and muscular-skeletal system. Maintaining a healthy diet and exercising as I was able. Learn as much as I could about the condition. Reading about others that had been successful in managing the condition and change what I need to get the best outcome. Through all this I kept a grateful attitude. Looking each day for what I was thankful for and writing it in my gratitude diary.

Remember you may not be able to change what is happening to you but you can change your attitude to it.
