Add Enjoyment to Your Life by Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

An important aspect of self-development is to know when it’s time to change something about your life that isn’t serving you. When you change, you often become more confident, skilled, and comfortable to start looking at other areas in your life and making bigger changes. However, any kind of change, even if it will make your life more enjoyable, can be difficult because it involves stepping out of your comfort zone. How can you reduce this discomfort? Frankly, the more you push yourself to step out of your comfort zone, the more you gain, and the easier it becomes. The more you gain, the more likely it is that you’ll be willing to push yourself again in the future. Try these suggestions to step out of your comfort zone: Do something new once a week. Don’t get stuck in a rut. Instead, open your mind to original ideas and experiences. Engage in a new activity every 7 days or so. Maybe you’ll try reading a biography instead of a mystery. Jogging every so often on your daily walk brings variety. Perhaps there’s a new recipe or food you’ve been curious to try for the first time. Go for it! Start small. Do you watch only situation comedies on television? Instead, why not try watching one show on the Public Broadcasting System to expand your mind? Good eating habits and healthy foods are key to staying healthier for longer.

Good nutrition plays a significant role in determining your well-being as you get older, and in delaying and reducing the risk of lifestyle diseases. Not eating enough fruits and vegetables is responsible for close to three million deaths worldwide every year. In addition, dietary fat seems to be associated with various cancers, and nutritionally unbalanced diets, which are often associated with diabetes, can play a significant role in increasing the risks of developing coronary heart disease. Many of the diseases associated with aging are a result of dietary factors, some of which have been in operation since infancy. Food preferences tend to be formed in childhood, and children who eat a balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables are likely to continue eating such a diet into adulthood. Parents who eat too much processed food with high levels of salt, sugar and fat tend to pass those habits onto their own children. It is never too late to change dietary habits, though it is better to start eating a balanced diet early in life, though it should be noted that nutritional requirements change as a body ages, with calorific needs decreasing and nutritional needs increasing. Age discrimination does it exist?

  We live in a society that is opposed to any form of discrimination and laws that protect us from this so with this in mind I am asking the question, “age discrimination does it exist?” Now I am NOT neutral on this, in fact, I have a very strong opinion on this subject which I will share with you shortly. We are an aging population over 60 with the number reaching 841 million in 2013, and expected to treble by 2050 (un.org) pdf Never before in history has this happened. It has been brought about by the post, World War 2 baby boom but also by the increase in life expectancy since this time. The average age of a life was 65-75 but now you can add 10-20 years to this. The problem is society hasn’t changed its perception or attitude to accommodate the change and still view people over 60 as being old. With this, there is an expectation that once you reach this age you are less capable of performing activities a young version of you can do! It can even go as far as looking at you as less able to function in every area of life Okay, now it is obvious by age discrimination I am not talking about the young, although I am sure they are also discriminated against. What is so exciting about this is that where we once thought that what we inherited from our parents was our lot this is not necessarily the case.  So if heart disease ran in the family other members would expect to suffer from it. You hear people say “oh such and such runs in our family so it is inevitable that I will get it.” Well now science is saying we can no longer blame these diseases on our parents. It appears that even when we do inherit these genes from our biological parents they may or may not be active in us.  So when a gene is activated or turned on it is called gene expression.  But what is so interesting is that this genetic expression can be affected by our experiences and even our thoughts and feelings....

It is Your Time to Shine!

It is time you stood out rather than trying to fit in!  Let others see your awesomeness!  Believe in yourself and what you have to offer to yourself and others. It is your time to shine. If you are over the age of 55 years and have been living your life according to others needs and wishes, trying to please, keep the peace, running here, organizing this that and the other for others, it is time to re-evaluate your life and look at setting a new course that reflects you, your values, your needs, dreams and desires. I am not saying to up sticks leave your family, friends, job or whatever your life looks like at the moment but don’t wait for some major life event, before you take stock of what you really want your life to look like going forward through mid-life and beyond! It is at this stage more than any other that you will have the time, experience and hopefully the freedom to live life on your terms.  It is a time for reflection and an opportunity to make the rest of your life matter for you.  If you have neglected yourself over the years in the busyness of daily life then it is now time to take care of you and your needs. Attitude is Everything. 6 Tips on How to Change a Negative Attitude.

Attitude is everything!  You here this a lot but what impact does attitude have on day to day life?  Let me show you what impact it had on an event in my life then I will share with you 6 tips on how you can change a negative attitude to give you a more positive outcome. I am a very physical person and very disciplined when it comes to exercise in fact I have trouble sitting still for any length of time. However, recently I was diagnosed with an auto-immune condition affecting my motor skills and strength.  I found it difficult to walk and my ability to grip or lift anything was greatly impaired!  I also lost feeling in my hands, feet and legs.  I suffered from extreme fatigue so had to limit my activity to small bursts. I could no longer do my job so had to resign and the day to day activities became more and more difficult. During this time I kept going to the gym every second day doing a cycling class and weights as I could manage.  After seeking medical help I was started on treatment and am now almost back to normal function. I could have used this situation as an excuse to do nothing but I chose to take full responsibility for my life.  The result was I could remain positive despite the circumstances which gave me the strength and confidence to keep going and making the most of the situation.
