Add Enjoyment to Your Life by Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

Add Enjoyment to Your Life by Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

An important aspect of self-development is to know when it’s time to change something about your life that isn’t serving you. When you change, you often become more confident, skilled, and comfortable to start looking at other areas in your life and making bigger changes. However, any kind of change, even if it will make your life more enjoyable, can be difficult because it involves stepping out of your comfort zone. How can you reduce this discomfort? Frankly, the more you push yourself to step out of your comfort zone, the more you gain, and the easier it becomes. The more you gain, the more likely it is that you’ll be willing to push yourself again in the future. Try these suggestions to step out of your comfort zone: Do something new once a week. Don’t get stuck in a rut. Instead, open your mind to original ideas and experiences. Engage in a new activity every 7 days or so. Maybe you’ll try reading a biography instead of a mystery. Jogging every so often on your daily walk brings variety. Perhaps there’s a new recipe or food you’ve been curious to try for the first time. Go for it! Start small. Do you watch only situation comedies on television? Instead, why not try watching one show on the Public Broadcasting System to expand your mind? It won’t cost you anything and you might even open up a whole new world of intellectual stimulation.   Acknowledge the discomfort (of leaving your comfort zone). Your feelings are normal. Almost everyone feels a bit unsettled when they do something for the first...
Good eating habits and healthy foods are key to staying healthier for longer.

Good eating habits and healthy foods are key to staying healthier for longer.

Good nutrition plays a significant role in determining your well-being as you get older, and in delaying and reducing the risk of lifestyle diseases. Not eating enough fruits and vegetables is responsible for close to three million deaths worldwide every year. In addition, dietary fat seems to be associated with various cancers, and nutritionally unbalanced diets, which are often associated with diabetes, can play a significant role in increasing the risks of developing coronary heart disease. Many of the diseases associated with aging are a result of dietary factors, some of which have been in operation since infancy. Food preferences tend to be formed in childhood, and children who eat a balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables are likely to continue eating such a diet into adulthood. Parents who eat too much processed food with high levels of salt, sugar and fat tend to pass those habits onto their own children. It is never too late to change dietary habits, though it is better to start eating a balanced diet early in life, though it should be noted that nutritional requirements change as a body ages, with calorific needs decreasing and nutritional needs increasing. One of the issues today is the accessibility of fast food outlets and the convenience of processed foods in our busy lifestyle.  Add to this the cost of fresh fruit and vegetables and you have created a society of fast food low-cost consumers who have become conditioned to an unhealthy lifestyle. What are the benefits of eating a Healthy Diet? We all want to look and feel good at any age but as we...

Epigenetics, Health,Well-being and Ageing.

What does Epigenetics have to do with our health, wellbeing and aging for that matter what is Epigenetics. Let’s start with what it is: The term epigenetics refers to heritable changes in gene expression (on or off switch) that does not involve changes to the underlying DNA sequence; a change in phenotype without a change in genotype.   Epigenetics-The study of heritable changes in phenotype that does not involve changes in the underlying DNA sequence. Phenotype-The observable physical traits or biochemical characteristics of an organism based on a combination of the organism’s genes and environmental factors. Genotype-The inherited genetic makeup of a cell. http://www.whatisepigenetics.com/what-is-epigenetics/ It is believed that epigenetics has the potential to explain the aging process, human development, the origins of cancer, heart disease, and mental health illnesses, as well as other disorders. What is so exciting about this is that where we once thought that what we inherited from our parents was our lot this is not necessarily the case.  So if heart disease ran in the family other members would expect to suffer from it. You hear people say “oh such and such runs in our family so it is inevitable that I will get it.” Well now science is saying we can no longer blame these diseases on our parents. It appears that even when we do inherit these genes from our biological parents they may or may not be active in us.  So when a gene is activated or turned on it is called gene expression.  But what is so interesting is that this genetic expression can be affected by our experiences and even our thoughts and feelings....

A Six Step Formula to Promote Lasting Happiness.

Most of us have gone through stages in life when we felt broken, confused and alone.  When we felt no joy in life and everything seems to be an effort.  This is not the same as clinical depression, which requires professional intervention, but a very low time in our life.  It could have been triggered by a life event or just a slow progression of small day to day events that have set off a cycle of negative thoughts and feelings. These small day to day events could be as simple as rushing every day to get to work or a repetitive job you don’t enjoy or family commitments that give you no time for yourself “ME” time!  No matter what it is that has caused the downward spiral there is a way back but it does take work on your part and it all comes back to your thoughts. Now for the purpose of this post I am not going to talk about past beliefs, attitudes and conditioning although they do play a big part it how you think and respond to outside events.  I am only going to give you a formula that I have used over the years when I have felt overwhelmed, broken and confused.  It is a do it yourself hug your broken pieces back together so you can become a whole person again. The Six Step Formula Acceptance is the first step. Trying to pull yourself out of the negative spiral you are in will only intensify the thoughts and feelings of despair.   Float! This is about letting go and focusing on your...

What is Ageless Living?

I mention Ageless living on most of my posts but what is ageless living, because let’s face it we are going to age and get old it is inevitable! We are not going to stay young forever. So let me tell you what ageless living means to me. Ageless living isn’t about looking young forever, although if that is what you are after there are plenty of cosmetic surgeons that will be happy to oblige.   It is about an attitude to aging, not the number of years you have graced this planet.  It is about how you live not how long you live. Having an open mind to the future and change and embracing life with all its surprises.  It is about being true to your values while being able to adapt to the changes that are taking place within you and the world around you.  Taking care and being happy with yourself. What would an ageless living woman be like? She is active and enthusiastic with a great support system of family and friends. She likes to look good and takes care of herself. She knows the value of good daily habits and having a positive outlook on life. She enjoys looking good and makes the most of herself by good grooming and wears clothing and make-up that is fashionable, on trend and flattering, while not being to obsessed with trying to looking younger. She has an inquiring mind and is open to new ideas and concepts.  She is not afraid to try new things and take on new challenges. Her life is not void of...

Get off Your Backside and Start Moving!

With the invention of the internet and all the new technology people are not only sitting down at work all day, but are spending more and more time sitting down period instead of getting off their backsides and moving. So number one in the anti-aging tips is “Get off your backside and start moving.” There was a study done stating inactivity as being more dangerous to health than obesity, but to me it isn’t as simple as this! Inactivity can lead to obesity and obesity can lead to inactivity!  It can be a viscous cycle!  It is very hard to get motivated to move when you are overweight everything is an effort and the more weight you carry the harder it is. There can be other factors to why someone doesn’t exercise some physical, like neuro-muscular/ muscular-skeletal, respiratory, cardio-vascular or neurological problems or psychological eg depression, anxiety etc. According to the World Health Organisation 2 million deaths, a year is caused by physical inactivity worldwide. People that are inactive are at greater risk of Heart attacks and strokes Hypertension (high blood pressure) a major risk factor for heart disease. developing certain cancers developing type 2 diabetes Osteoporosis, leading to fractures in the aging population.  Over half of hip fractures could be avoided with regular physical exercise obesity which in turn can put you at greater risk of the above medical conditions injuries, falls within the aging population Anxiety and depression loss of motivation Than people that are physically active.   The answer is to get moving.  This has to begin with awareness and a desire to do something about it....
